Catching Up

Warning: a lot of waffle lies ahead. Skip to the last few paragraphs if you just want to know my plans. (No, not plans, I don’t make plans any more. Vague intentions? Nebulous thoughts? Hopes? Yeah, probably hopes.)

Hello, everyone, I hope you’re doing well.

It’s been a while since I last did one of these. Sorry about that, but life, as I’m sure we’re all feeling, has been pretty rough lately. These last two and a half years have been particularly tough, dealing with depression, losing my grandmother, helping deal with her house, battling some legal things and then losing my dad suddenly at the end of last year. To top it all off, I have ME/CFS (I’ve had it since I was 11) and it’s been hitting my really hard of late.

NaNo Thoughts

Hey, everyone, how are we doing?

As it’s the last day in October, normally I’d be gearing up for NaNoWriMo. Sadly, I won’t be taking part this year. I really wanted to and I had so many plans, but I’m just not going to have time or, quite frankly, the energy.

My grandmother passed away at the end of September, after a short illness, so life has been full of sadness, upheaval and far too much organising and legal stuff. And it still is, to be honest, so most of my time of late has been helping my mum make sense of it all. My mum also broke her wrist along the way, so I’ve been driving her around, taking her to hospital appointments and writing down everything she needs, which hasn’t left much time for writing – or even thinking about writing. She’s hoping to start working part-time again soon, which will require more chauffeuring and eat up even more time, so alas, no NaNo for me this year.

I might try and work something out for January instead, but in the meantime, to all the other NaNo participants this year, good luck and happy writing!

5 Years Here

I can’t believe today is my fifth anniversary of joining WordPress. I vaguely knew that it was coming up this month, but I wasn’t exactly sure until I got a little notification about it earlier.

Aw, happy birthday, little blog.

It’s also five years since I self-published my first book (Orion’s Kiss), or as near as makes no nevermind. I had hoped to have a few things planned to celebrate, but I’m up to my eyebrows in writing at the moment so it’ll have to wait until this book is done. I think I only have a handful of chapters to go, though, so hopefully I can come up with something soon.

Don’t get too excited, Aekhartain fans. I don’t think Shaiel and Co are about to make a surprise appearance. Although with that lot, who can say? Especially as I just said they wouldn’t, contrary so and sos, but I think they’re all too entertained watching me wrestle a bear-dragon-thing right now to interrupt. After that the bets are off. But I’ll probably just join Twitter (finally) and bore everyone with my random disconnected writing thoughts instead.

Like: Aw, friends… Argh, it’s a BEAR!
That’s not a bear! We’ll fight it anyway.

No! Don’t touch the water!

Biiiiiiiiiiiig trouble. Starshine Surprise!

(Sample of my writing notes, because the next few chapters are going to be… interesting.)

Then again, I am supposed to be editing Burning Sky next, so I’ll probably go mad coming up with other stuff to do instead. (Ah, procrastination. What could I get done without you?)

Until then, I hope you’re doing well, my lovelies! And if you want some sort of update about what’s going on with me and my Patreon plans, I have a post all about it you can read over there right now.

Merry Wednesday, all!

NaNo 2018 Round Up

December is here, NaNo is over, let’s see what I managed to get done.

NaNoWriMo Goal 1: Complete Burning Sky

Even though I was already nearly halfway through writing this book, the only thing I really wanted to achieve last month was finishing it. And I did!

Day 10. 42,562 words added. Goal achieved.

But I didn’t want to stop there, so I took a day to prepare myself to start the next Dragonlands novel – and promptly jumped into an unrelated novella from a brand new series.

NaNoWriMo Goal 2: Write Thief’s Gamble

The idea of a Foundation of Aquila series has been knocking around the back of my brain for a year or two (someone asked about it on Wattpad), but I hadn’t really pinned anything down yet. Until Keo and Lahera burst into full life and took over NaNo, leaving me with a completed novella and plenty of ideas for the series to follow. This one should (hopefully) be a lot of fun. I really do need to write another Dragonlands novel first, though.

Regardless of my plans or best intentions, I finished it. And for once an attempted novella stayed an actual novella. I am all astonishment!

Day 20. 25,028 words later. Goal achieved.

Two things down and I still had nine days left. I guess that meant I could finally crack on with that Dragonlands novel.

Wrong.

NaNoWriMo Goal 3: Finish Aftermath

I fully intended to make a start on Ice Falls, I swear I did, but to be honest the last nine days of NaNo weren’t great for me. Mostly because of fatigue issues. I also don’t really have a feel for where this book is supposed to start, so I need to go back and look at the end of Burning Sky before I tackle it.

Anyway, my head was so desperate not to start Ice Falls it seized on Aftermath instead. This is an entirely self-indulgent, overblown epilogue novella for the Wingborn series, which ties up some of the romances and side characters and little things that I didn’t really have room for in the main books. It was supposed to be short and sweet and full of warm fuzziness. I originally dove straight into it after finishing Wingborn 6, but I stalled after a while and it became yet another thing I’ve struggled to finish this year.

However, NaNo was going well, so I thought, why not? Give it a go. The worst that can happen is I’ll get stuck precisely where I’ve been stuck all year.

Day 30. 19,947 words added. Goal achieved!

Three stories finished. 86,340 words written in total. Two major albatrosses released back into the wild. I can’t believe how well that went.

Although, if I look back at my daily tallies, it could have gone a little better. There were 13 days when I didn’t write a single word, and even my biggest daily haul (9135 words) is a bit below my best. I didn’t experience my usual rush of momentum where I write more and more and more as the month goes on, but that’s probably because I’m used to focusing on one project from start to finish, not jumping in halfway and finishing several things along the way.

So perhaps I could have written more, but looking back I am more than happy with how I did. Burning Sky is finally finished! A pair of new characters have established themselves in a whole new series and I’m excited to get back to them and let their story unfold. I’m also relieved that Aftermath is done, even though I acknowledge it’s no longer a novella, bonus or otherwise. But I knew that after it passed 30K, I was just living in denial. Still, it’s done, yay! And I’ll figure out what to do with it later.

For now, thanks NaNo! I don’t know why the mere thought of the challenge can break through blockages that have frustrated me all year, I’m just glad that it did. November is done. Thanks for the word count, but now it’s time to move on.

To all my fellow NaNoers, I hope you enjoyed your month and had fun with all your words. Here’s to you all! And I’ll see you again next year.

Merry December, everyone!

September Catch Up

Where did September go? What happened? I had all these beautiful plans laid out, the next thing I know I have one week left and no book… Meep.

Anyway, here’s a brief list of what I’m babbling about today:

  • There’s only one week left to read Storm Wings for free.
  • There’s just over one week left to pre-order Storm Wings for .99 on Amazon.
  • Aquila’s War is coming!
  • If you can’t wait, you can read the Prologue and Chapter One now on Patreon.
  • Cloud Cursed is going up in price next week.
  • I have a new puppy!

More in-depth below.

World’s End is done!

94,954 words down and the book is finished.

Not only is this the end of the book, it’s the end of the Wingborn series! YAY!

This isn’t the end of the Overworld, of course – I haven’t finished the Dragonlands series yet, and I’ve already got a novella idea about what happens with certain characters after World’s End – but this plot arc is done. Done, I say!

Which is pretty big, because I’ve been playing with the Wingborn/Rift Riders stuff since 2003 after I had my first dream about a girl and her dog in a skiff being dragged across a sea of clouds by her giant eagle. Things have certainly changed a lot since then, and there were years when I didn’t touch the books, but still, the ideas and characters have been with me for a while, so it was nice to finally get to the end of it all.

I am exhausted. Although that might have more to do with what I did with my celebratory morning off…

Bru Walk

Serenaded by skylarks, watched over by buzzards, surrounded by primroses and the first budding leaves on the alder trees, with bursts of sunshines overhead, I do believe that spring might actually be here.

I hope your week has been going as well as mine.

Take care, my lovelies!

Storm Emma

While the east coast and Scotland battled the Beast from the East over the last few days, here in the Devon we got Storm Emma – and yesterday, it snowed.

Bru In Snow 2

All day.

Bru In Snow 3

And then it rained.

And the rain froze.

Ice Tree 1Ice Tree 2

We don’t get much snow around here normally. Maybe a flurry or two a year. Sometimes it settles for a few hours, mostly it doesn’t. Throw in the freezing rain on top and, well, home never feels so good as when it’s cold and you can stay inside and ignore the howl of the wind.

Bru In Snow 1

Here’s hoping all those people stuck out on the roads can get home and warm soon.

And to everyone else… Merry March!
