Catching Up

Warning: a lot of waffle lies ahead. Skip to the last few paragraphs if you just want to know my plans. (No, not plans, I don’t make plans any more. Vague intentions? Nebulous thoughts? Hopes? Yeah, probably hopes.)

Hello, everyone, I hope you’re doing well.

It’s been a while since I last did one of these. Sorry about that, but life, as I’m sure we’re all feeling, has been pretty rough lately. These last two and a half years have been particularly tough, dealing with depression, losing my grandmother, helping deal with her house, battling some legal things and then losing my dad suddenly at the end of last year. To top it all off, I have ME/CFS (I’ve had it since I was 11) and it’s been hitting my really hard of late.

October Overworld Takeover!

It’s been a while since I last updated, so I thought not only was it time to catch up, but since it’s a new month and I have a new Overworld series about to begin, why not have an Overworld October?

Changes have been afoot for me. Mages of Royas Bay has finished and I’ve shut down my Patreon (for various reasons). Hopefully this means I’ll have more time to post here. Starting tomorrow with a brand new book from a brand new series, set in a very familiar world.

Misfits of Aquila
Aquila’s Originals Book 1

On a world cursed to be covered in clouds, the elite eagle-riding Rift Riders rule the skies. Five years after the events of the Wingborn series,  a new class is ready to join them – but this year’s crop is unlike any other.

The first Ihran to ever to train as a Rider; a rebellious princess in hiding; an atheist cast out of a deeply religious society; a student from the land where Riders are banned – and Rhiddyl. The Riders have never trained anyone quite like her before.

But it isn’t so easy to reach Aquila, the Rider’s legendary home. First they must pass the selection school and face the Choice, where they will be united with their eagle companions in a bond that will last the rest of their lives.

No pressure.

Welcome back to the Overworld. A new adventure has begun.

If you’ve never read an Overworld book before, don’t worry. While some of the background characters might be familiar to longtime readers, this is a brand new series, no prior knowledge needed. Jump right in and (hopefully) enjoy!

But this isn’t all I’ve been working on. Oh no. Four years after the first Overworld ebooks were released, I finally have something long planned for and promised on the way…

PAPERBACKS!

If you’re an old school reader and prefer to hold real books in your hand, I am finally about to have something for you. They’re not ready yet and still need a fair few tweaks here and there – I haven’t even ordered proofs of the last three yet. But they are coming. Finally.

I hope to have release details about Wingborn over the next few weeks, with the others to follow on a roughly monthly basis after. But books! Real books! Ones you can hold in your actual hands. I might even go completely wild and release the Dragonlands too while I’m at it.

But that’s probably a project for next year. Right here and now it’s all about Misfits and Wingborn, and I might even throw in a few extra stories, deleted scenes and drabbles in if I’m feeling so inclined.

Possibly a paperback giveaway, if anyone’s interested?

We’ll see. I have no real idea what Overworld October will entail, so feel free to make requests. For now, though, I shall hope you’re all staying safe and well, and taking care of yourselves and your loved ones. I’ll be back tomorrow with a brand new adventure.

Merry October, everyone!

Updates

Quick Update

Hey, everyone, I hope wherever you are in the world right now you’re doing okay and that you and your families are safe.

I’ve been thinking a lot over the last week or so – since the Wingborn series finished – about what I can do as a writer to help entertain people stuck inside. I have a few ideas and I’ll be sticking a poll up tomorrow to ask for your opinions. One thing that will be coming this weekend is a short story featuring Dhori visiting his mum to give her an update on Rift Rider related events.

Beyond that I’ve been working really hard to get my next books ready to publish. I know it’s been a while and the delays were out of my hands, but over the next few months I plan to release the last two Dragonlands books (Broken Ground and Setting Sun), along with World’s End and Aftermath, the Wingborn extra (extended epilogue) novel, which I’m currently serialising on Patreon. Busy, busy, busy.

After they’re done, I’m really hoping to work on Wingborn paperback editions and get some more writing done. I miss writing. I also should probably do something about this place. It’s been a while and it could really use some attention.

Eh, maybe when I get some of this mythical free time people talk about.

And that’s it really. Nothing too exciting, but that’s not a bad thing right now.

Take care, lovely people xx

NaNo Thoughts

Hey, everyone, how are we doing?

As it’s the last day in October, normally I’d be gearing up for NaNoWriMo. Sadly, I won’t be taking part this year. I really wanted to and I had so many plans, but I’m just not going to have time or, quite frankly, the energy.

My grandmother passed away at the end of September, after a short illness, so life has been full of sadness, upheaval and far too much organising and legal stuff. And it still is, to be honest, so most of my time of late has been helping my mum make sense of it all. My mum also broke her wrist along the way, so I’ve been driving her around, taking her to hospital appointments and writing down everything she needs, which hasn’t left much time for writing – or even thinking about writing. She’s hoping to start working part-time again soon, which will require more chauffeuring and eat up even more time, so alas, no NaNo for me this year.

I might try and work something out for January instead, but in the meantime, to all the other NaNo participants this year, good luck and happy writing!

September Catch Up

Where did September go? What happened? I had all these beautiful plans laid out, the next thing I know I have one week left and no book… Meep.

Anyway, here’s a brief list of what I’m babbling about today:

  • There’s only one week left to read Storm Wings for free.
  • There’s just over one week left to pre-order Storm Wings for .99 on Amazon.
  • Aquila’s War is coming!
  • If you can’t wait, you can read the Prologue and Chapter One now on Patreon.
  • Cloud Cursed is going up in price next week.
  • I have a new puppy!

More in-depth below.

Wednesday Round Up

I feel like I’ve been busier than usual of late, so here’s a quick link post to recap it all.

First, Cloud Cursed is out! And still at its low introductory price of 0.99 (or the lowest equivalent I could list it at). Grab it while it’s cheap.

Or sign up to my Patreon before this Friday and get it for free!

Speaking of Patreon, if you take a look over there right now you’ll find a couple of posts unlocked for everyone to read:

There are also plenty of posts that are locked for only my Patrons to see.

And that’s it for the moment. I’m currently taking a few days off to reset my brain before diving into Storm Wings edits, but I did read through Wingborn #6 the other day and found it less awful than I thought, which was nice. I’m also getting a much clearer idea of how the Dragonlands series is going to turn out and a few more Goryal Adventure ideas.

Here’s hoping your own September is working out as well.

Take care, my lovelies.

Pink sun in the morning, go back to bed warning

For those in a hurry, here’s the condensed version.

  • Cloud Cursed is on track to come out next Friday!
  • You can pre-order Storm Wings from Amazon right now!
  • I made a mess of things, which is why the pre-order is for the wrong book.
  • My Patreon goes live tomorrow! Along with the first two Aquila’s War posts.

Read on for the in-depth version…

What’s Coming Up?

I know it’s been a while, so for anyone short on time here are the main points about which I’ll ramble more below.

  • Cloud Cursed (Dragonlands #3) will finally be released on September 7th!
  • Storm Riders (Wingborn #4) will follow on October 5th. The free serial posts will also be removed then, because…
  • Aquila’s War (Wingborn #5) serial will start, here and Wattpad, on October 5th!
  • If, however, you cannot wait that long, I will start posting it on Patreon from next Friday, August 31st!

That’s the short stuff out of the way. Now for the detail.

Cloud Cursed 3This book has been a very long time coming, for which I can only apologise. This year hasn’t gone at all the way I planned, but I’m trying very hard to get back on track.

Full information and pre-order links will hopefully go up next week, along with the first few chapters.

It will also be on offer: $.99 for all pre-orders and the first week of release. Thank you for being patient!

The omnibus version of books 1-3 will follow in the next few months, so if you’d rather wait for all three at once (Blazing Dawn, Storm Rising and Cloud Cursed), you can.

Storm Wings Cover 1

Thanks also go to everyone who read through Storm Wings. I truly appreciate each and every one of you!

Pre-order links will go up after Cloud Cursed is finished with, and it will also be on offer until release day. I don’t normally like having my releases so close together, but I couldn’t delay Cloud Cursed any longer.

Aquila's War Cover 1I hope you’re as excited for the next phase of Mhysra & Co’s journey as I am. Unlike books 1-4, which I wrote years ago and haven’t really changed, Aquila’s War and World’s End were both written within the last year. I really hope you like it.

As mentioned above, I’m starting a Patreon page offering early access to AW, along with plenty of other things. The page itself isn’t ready yet, but I’ll let you know as soon as it is.

It isn’t exclusive – not for the Wingborn series – because I totally understand that not everyone can pay for it. However, I will have plenty of other fun and exclusive things for those who can and/or want to support my writing in this way.

And that’s about it for the moment. Proper links and things will follow in due course. It’s going to be a busy couple of months for me, but I also hope to get firmly back into writing at some point so that by the time NaNoWriMo rolls around I’ll be ready for it.

In the meantime, thanks for sticking around. I hope life and the universe are treating you kindly.

Take care, my lovelies!

2018 – The Story So Far

2018 Bruin

I thought it was time for a little catch-up, and since most of the UK is hunkering down under the Beast from the East, today seemed as good a time as any.

Well, since my last catch up post in mid-January I have not done much. Not for want of trying. I started World’s End and was edging close to getting into the swing of things, until my left shoulder went wrong. I didn’t actually do anything to it, but it hurt, a lot, and meant I couldn’t do most of what I needed to. It’s something that tends to flare up whenever I get really fatigued and there isn’t much I can do about it until it goes away. Typing becomes impossible because I can’t get comfortable enough to think, let alone put words in decent sentences. Once I’ve forced myself to do the things that need doing, all I’m really good for is reading. With many cushions.

Three and a good weeks on, it’s finally settled down, so maybe I can get back to writing. Ha! We’ll see…

So February was pretty much a write off. I didn’t get anything written, but I did skim an edit through Wingborn again. This will hopefully be for the first Wingborn Collection (1-3), which is the next thing on my release list. I’ve decided to push Cloud Cursed back again, because I have a feeling I need to finish the Wingborn series before I do any more work on the Dragonlands, and I’d really like to get book 4 written before releasing book 3.

It’s complicated, I know, but it makes sense to me. Sort of. So if you’re waiting for the next Dragonlands book, sorry! But right now it’s the Wingborn books that people seem to want, so I’d like to focus on those for a few more months and maybe even get some print editions in the works.

Away from the writing and imaginary worlds… look at my puppy! Hasn’t he grown? Still only six months, but rapidly transforming into a monster. Keeping him entertained probably hasn’t helped my shoulder and fatigue issues, but he’s worth it.

But enough of me and mine, how be you fine people? Ready for March to march on in? Got any exciting plans in the works? Whatever is ahead, I hope the year is treating you well.

Overworld, Updates

Hello, 2018

Houndtor Haze

Two weeks into January, and so far the year is bumping along much like the old one did. Plenty of things to do, plenty of other things getting in the way and trying to do their best to make sure I don’t get things done, same old, same old.

No worries. This year I have decided I’m not going to make predictions, I’m not going to set any schedules, I will simply set out to achieve things and hope I manage to get them done eventually. I do have a list, but I’m keeping it private for now and will only talk about things that have actually been finished.

Which leads me to… AQUILA’S WAR (Wingborn book 5) IS DONE!

This was my NaNoWriMo project from last year that got derailed mid-November, and I wasn’t able to pick it up again until the start of this month. But after putting in an extra 36K words, it is done! WHOO! It needs a lot of work and there are a few characters and plot lines I might have accidentally forgotten, but that can be cleaned up later. For now it’s all done and the sixth and final Wingborn book is poking me with ideas, so I might just give in and write it next.

I have also finally gathered all the pieces together to puzzle out where the Dragonlands series is headed, which is also a big relief. Looking forward to sorting that one out.

Right now I’m trying to catch up with all the things that got dropped last year and putting other plans into place for future things this year. I’m also kicking around a few ideas of what I’ll tackle once Wingborn is done. I might take a break from the Overworld for a bit, but I might also stay put since there are a couple of stories trying to catch my attention. Lots of things to ponder.

In the meantime, I hope 2018 is treating you fairly thus far, and that your goals and plans – whatsoever they may be – bear the right kind of fruit for you.
